Fascinated with New York’s Jamaica Bay, I started dreaming about creating a similar wetland reserve on the Danube inside Belgrade, the area I explored by kayak. The proposal was accepted and the new Confluence of the Sava and the Danube Rivers IBA was recognised: Fourth: Try to protect as much of it. First: Dream about it.

A New York City Parks Department contractor just wiped out a breeding population of sparrows in tons of trouble already, on land owned by the parks department that was supposed to be protected as “Forever Wild.” Here’s a short video of the damage. Any destruction like this of a wetland would be bad, of course.

The little stiff-tails are almost year-round at Jamaica Bay though almost all leave to breed in the summer and in the depths of winter, when the ponds are almost completely frozen, they tend to head for open water. Wicked, right? She was essentially cream-colored, much lighter than the typical female Ruddy Duck. Hat-tip to Stella.

Corey encountered a bunch of winners, but 24 Common Redpolls at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, in almost the exact same spot he saw them a couple of years ago, feeding on birch inflorescence by the East Pond, were easily his best birds of the weekend. Wicked, right? No time to take a picture. The proposal from U.S. Hat-tip to Stella.

My mother, mother-in-law, and godmother are all visiting right now. Blair Cessna Mar 17th, 2011 at 3:01 pm I do most of my birdwatching right from my computer chair looking out my den window to my back yard. Jochen the swallows have arrived at NYC at Jamaica Bay National Wildlife Refuge too. Wicked, right? A perfect shot.

All of the shots in this post were taken on 1 March 2011 at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge’s West Pond as the sun was going down. Wicked, right? Because of is huge range and large and growing population it is classified as a Species of Least Concern , great news for those who like to feel the gaze of the Bufflehead upon them.
