A New York City Parks Department contractor just wiped out a breeding population of sparrows in tons of trouble already, on land owned by the parks department that was supposed to be protected as “Forever Wild.” Here’s a short video of the damage. Any destruction like this of a wetland would be bad, of course.

The little stiff-tails are almost year-round at Jamaica Bay though almost all leave to breed in the summer and in the depths of winter, when the ponds are almost completely frozen, they tend to head for open water. Wicked, right? She was essentially cream-colored, much lighter than the typical female Ruddy Duck. Hat-tip to Stella.

Best Bird of the Weekend (First of March 2011)

Corey encountered a bunch of winners, but 24 Common Redpolls at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, in almost the exact same spot he saw them a couple of years ago, feeding on birch inflorescence by the East Pond, were easily his best birds of the weekend. Wicked, right? No time to take a picture. The proposal from U.S. Hat-tip to Stella.

Jochen the swallows have arrived at NYC at Jamaica Bay National Wildlife Refuge too. Wicked, right? A perfect shot.

Bufflehead in Flight
