Welsh Report Shows Increased Animal Research at Cardiff University

According to a Wales on Sunday investigation, the number of animals used at Cardiff has risen by 13 percent since 2006. By comparison, Bangor University used 1,464 mice and 664 fish, Aberystwyth used 289 cattle, 153 mice and 102 sheep and Swansea used 1,208 fish.

For many years they were persecuted by farmers for preying on sheep, but in fact they will indeed do just that if they can. Kea are extremely curious birds, and investigate just about anything with their bills. They are excellent opportunists, and have developed a taste for meat to an extent almost unrivalled in the parrot order.

Greater Rheas: Germany’s new Big Bird

It is not unusual to drive by a farm building and see a bunch of Greater Rheas on the farm’s fenced-in pasture next to sheep or goats. Their ecology in Germany is being investigated, but the results have so far been inconclusive. Truth be told, we don’t know if they have any negative impact on our native flora and fauna.

Fitzroy Crossing low level bridge birding

Following the exploration the area was developed as sheep stations around 1882. We wandered over to investigate what a Great Bowerbird would collect near the township of Fitzroy Crossing and we were delighted to find quite an assortment of treasures.
