Ka’ena Point is also a breeding ground for the Federally protected Laysan albatross, where 45 nests were being carefully monitored by the non-profit Pacific Rim Conservation. The young men had severed the birds’ legs in order to remove the tags. According to state and federal investigators, they caused over $200,000 worth of damage.
