I have been a wild bird rehabilitator for 26 years, and you have my gratitude and admiration for your willingness to provide aid to a helpless creature. But nearly all the feeding advice on the internet is wrong.

Jayne Neville, a former wildlife rehabilitator specializing in songbirds, moved from Connecticut to Florida and immediately began making the acquaintance of all the birds in the area. Jayne had a pet carrier handy for wildlife rescue and the eagle was transported to Peace River Wildlife Center and treated for electrocution.

No hawk can carry off a 12-pound pet. No hawk can carry off a 3-pound pet. THE PETS THAT ARE IN REAL DANGER ARE THE ONES WHO ARE 12 POUNDS AND UNDER. THESE ARE THE PETS THAT HAWKS CAN SWOOP DOWN AND GRAB. DO NOT LEAVE YOUR PETS OUTSIDE WITHOUT SUPERVISION. The answer is: no.

It’s the bane of many rehabbers that they simply can’t get through to cat owners on this critical issue of free-roaming pets.
