The 28 odd species of this genus are found in the Sunda (the islands of Indonesia, Malaysia and the southern bit of Thailand) and the Philippines, and are named for the inescapable (in this region anyway) Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, he of the founding of Singapore fame.

In contrast, the females need to make sure not to get duped into raising actual cuckoos – the buntings are a targeted host species ( source ). Weirdly, this bird is also described as a common pest in Indonesia, responsible for substantial losses of rice.

It is an adherent to fresh water lakes, canals and swamps from India through East Asia, Indonesia and New Guinea. The classic bittern habit of freezing when alarmed with its bill raised can be seen in this species, though it allows very close approach or flushes if you get too close without seeing it.

They belong to the same species like those found back in Europe, Sus scrofa – which inhabits a belt stretching from northern Africa and Europe all the way to Indonesia, but a different subspecies, S.s. Back on dirt tracks by a Desert Wheatear decorated bush (bellow), to spot five or six Wild boars disappearing among the bushes.

During my previous five trips to Indonesia, I only heard but never caught a glimpse of three species. This of course raises questions of what happens when all of the inland nesting grounds of all the loons becomes covered with glacial ice during ice ages, then later, the ice melts and the lakes return.
