It has also been used by researchers from other fields, such as economists. I emailed the Dr. Lopez and asked about this research and the use of eBird data.

Fortunately, Black-crowned Night Heron s are quite common in Shanghai, though apparently endangered in Illinois ( source ). In the same article, Henry Adams, wildlife management coordinator for Lincoln Park Zoo’s Urban Wildlife Institute, describes the night heron as having “grumpy old geezer energy.”
