They may have been disturbed by the presence of hunters in the Danube backwaters. When I reached the levee earlier that morning, I met an elderly hunter from whom I learned that there was an ongoing duck and pheasant hunt, but no one was shooting from, nor towards the embankment, hence I should be safe there.

Where to find shorebirds around Belgrade, Serbia? So far, 33 species have been eBirded in Serbia. Let me add that the only ever ringed Critically Endangered (yet, possibly extinct) Slender-billed Curlew was ringed in northern Serbia (Carska bara Ramsar site) in the 1970s. The turn off is not marked and can be hard to spot.

These birds have already left my native Serbia, further north, and this is not just the only one I have seen in Greece, but my last bee-eater of the season. I can still hear the gunshots and hope that the hunters really do shoot only the flying birds. On a wire by the road, one European Bee-eater awaits me.

I am preparing for the new census of one of the rarest birds of Serbia, the globally threatened Great Bustard , taking place two days from now. Bustards are very susceptible to any kind of disturbance and, naturally, hunters like to shoot. m–8 ft 10 in). m–8 ft 10 in). Females are half of that size.

I do not know how roads in your nick of forest look like, but here in Serbia, many of them are poorly maintained and potholed.
