Although the statistics do not address the quality of the land purchased or other qualitative factors, it is safe to assume that when it comes to protecting habitat, size matters.

Kills in Canada, Alaska and Mexico are not included in the count. Further, the crane take in Mexico is a free-for-all: neither regulated nor recorded. Nationwide, wildlife watchers now outspend hunters 6 to 1. I’ve received letters and emails from a number of avid hunters who find the concept of shooting cranes repugnant.

My favorite part of these species accounts is the section on “Other Common or Regional Names,” which includes historic appellations as well as names of the bird in the Arctic, Quebec, and Mexico. He strongly believes that waterfowl hunters are the major reason we have waterfowl and wetlands in North America today.

The conservation need is urgent: great attention has rightly been paid to Brazil’s Amazonian rainforest but not enough resources have gone to the Pantanal and the Cerrado, of which only 4% and 5%, respectively, are protected. He lives in Forest Hills with Daisy, their son, Desmond Shearwater, and their two indoor cats, Hunter and B.B.
