Whenever the media report that someone has killed "an endangered animal" or "an endangered species," they too confuse an individual with a species. Hunters kill members of endangered species. residents believe that it's wrong to kill animals for their pelts, but the pelt industry is legal.

To the Editor: “ Getting Bacon the Hard Way: Hog-Tying 400 Pounds of Fury ” (front page, June 21), about Texas hog hunters, illustrated the barbarity of hunting with dogs. As the dogs tear chunks of flesh from the terrified pig, the hunters undoubtedly feel proud of their accomplishment.

Note in this 2010 video, birders, birdwatching and kayakers are mentioned, not hunters. Visitors are encouraged to wear hunter orange during hunting seasons for safety.

Secretarybirds counter this by being very careful when killing snakes and ensuring that the prey is dead before eating it. Sometimes they will pick up other prey and, aided by their incredible height, they will kill the prey by repeatedly dropping it on hard ground. Watching them hunt is fascinating.

Lacking, as I do, a birding reputation that would make people part with cash for my time I’ll have to go for the rarity hunters and put together an itinerary of highlights that can’t be missed. The sheltered bays of the Coromandel are home to another endemic, the Southern Merganser. I can’t lose.
