My second favorite rescue story is that of Hunter, a beagle-ish dog that my daughter and son-in-law adopted from a shelter in Massachusetts. Turns out even though they knew that Hunter had found his forever home, he didn’t know it. The work of shelters and breed rescue organizations is vital. The destruction was profound.

Hunters kill members of endangered species. And perhaps my favorite: "[I]f healthy, homeless humans were rounded up and killed, no one would call the killing facilities 'shelters'" (55). Whenever the media report that someone has killed "an endangered animal" or "an endangered species," they too confuse an individual with a species.

It provides shelter for many songbirds and water-associated animals, including the river otter, turtles, beaver, American pelicans, ospreys, and migratory songbirds. Note in this 2010 video, birders, birdwatching and kayakers are mentioned, not hunters. Visitors are encouraged to wear hunter orange during hunting seasons for safety.

To the Editor: “ Getting Bacon the Hard Way: Hog-Tying 400 Pounds of Fury ” (front page, June 21), about Texas hog hunters, illustrated the barbarity of hunting with dogs. As the dogs tear chunks of flesh from the terrified pig, the hunters undoubtedly feel proud of their accomplishment.

On several occasions I’ve seen animals that are making a beeline towards shelter double-back when the wings are spread straight into their waiting talons. Their two incredibly long central tail streamers resemble the tail-coats that many of the – mostly male – secretaries wore in those days.
