To be honest, both the robin and the flycatchers shown above remind me of the easter eggs I hunted for as a child – the same strong colors in front of a green background, same time of the year (feel free to insert your own Proust Madeleine reference here) … Bluethroats apparently are good at imitating other birds.

But in Iraq, and more exactly, Kurdistan and Iraqi Kurdistan, they are supposed to be there (and are regularly hunted and eaten) and the fighting is not supposed to be there. Researchers are wondering if the die-off might spread to other birds or even fish. This is not something I needed to tell you but there is some new research.

However recent research has shown that they are in fact not baboons, despite superficial appearances, and they are now just called “Gelada”. they are the most terrestrial primate after humans. This has resulted in their populations returning to natural levels and their fear of humans being curtailed. Male Gelada in his prime.

The causes were the usual reasons for island extinction—deforestation by both humans and invasive plants that crowded out native plants, hunting, and invasive rats, mongoose, monkeys, and, of course, feral cats. Is it any wonder that Pink Pigeons were on the brink of extinction when humans intervened? Horses bolted.

In university labs nationwide, scientists inflict spinal-cord injuries on dogs and cats, inject rats with carcinogens, test dangerous drugs on monkeys, and do all kinds of evil things to guinea pigs in the name of scientific research. Many (though not all) animal lovers kind of suck too, including myself. I think we have it backward.
