We worship birds, we hunt birds, we protect birds, and, yes, we eat birds. and also Modern Iraq, Egypt, Albania, Mexico, Poland and the Philippines. As they say, the relationship is complicated.

In 2012, I reviewed The Jewel Hunter , an absorbing narrative in which author Chris Goodie travelled throughout Asia, Africa, and Australasia to observe and photograph every Pitta species in the world. A passion for one bird family is also very useful. Like all talented travel writers, Dunn is adept at drawing us into his experiences.

My favorite part of these species accounts is the section on “Other Common or Regional Names,” which includes historic appellations as well as names of the bird in the Arctic, Quebec, and Mexico. He strongly believes that waterfowl hunters are the major reason we have waterfowl and wetlands in North America today.
