Researchers can continue most experiments on mankind's closest relatives -- chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans -- after European Union lawmakers watered down proposals to restrict testing. An Alachua County Circuit Court judge has ordered the University of Florida to provide an animal rights activist with records on primates involved in research. Camille Marino of Wildwood, who founded the group Negotiation is Over, received the records last week. Full article in the Gainesville Sun.

I almost quit a book club a year ago because one of the members is a proponent of medical research. I posted on this blog about quitting because of the New Iberia scandal in Louisiana in which the Humane Society found primates being abused. I had to stay in that group because she must be challenged.

I had never heard of the use of ferrets in medical research though. A national physicians group has filed a federal complaint against the University of Washington, saying its use of ferrets to train medical residents in emergency procedures on babies and children violates a federal animal-welfare law. News to me.

So, I belong to this book group of 5 to 7 women. I've been with the group for a while and it's not bad. There is one member of this group who works for a pharmaceutical company. She supports medical research on animals. One scene has the author entering the part of the hospital where the research animals are.

I've decided to quit my book club, which I dearly love, because of a member who works in medical research and supports animal experimentation. This has been a very difficult decision for me, because I have such good friends in the group. I thought I could stay with the group because she does give me fodder for the blog.
