Each of these habitats attracts its own group of species. But, when I checked eBird to make sure I had my facts straight, I found only one sighting listed this far from the coast, and it was by the legendary ornithologist Chester Lamb… in 1951! This sort of biozone mixing can create a tremendous richness of species.

After filling our water bottles at the clear mountain spring, the group splits and the majority continue on foot across the high pass to find many signs of bear presence in the area – scratching posts, scat (above), footprints; while the two of us continue by car along the very good final section of macadam prior to the village. Not at all.

The Joy of One-eyed Birding

Lamb, who surveyed the birds of western Mexico from 1932-1955, and whose lists have been posted on eBird in recent years. I saw a group of six medium-large, long-billed shorebirds feeding in several inches of water. All of which makes me a true one-eyed king. (It At least, that is what I thought!)

Birdmania at the Cano Negro Bird Count, Costa Rica

“Bird Count at Cano Negro” was too mundane to portray the boat rides, mosquitoes, remote habitats, the surprise lamb chops lunch, and other situations. Rain came and went but it cooled things down and also gave us a chance to sit down and enjoy a wonderful, home-cooked meal of rice, beans, and lamb!

Birding Fallon: Well Worth the Trip

The specials for our dinner at The Slanted Porch in Fallon included dishes prepared from cows and lambs raised by local 4-H Club kids.). Our guide, former wildlife refuge manager Mike Goddard, pointed out a pair of Cinnamon Teal in flagrante delicto. Wilson’s Phalaropes did their crazy spinning thing, to our collective amusement.
