We are currently doing an investigation on pig farms in Spain, including intensive and extensive/free-range farms (tho extensive ones are scarce since intensive ones are the majority in the industry). These initiatives are mostly listed in Solid Air (not the Facebook group or iNaturalist, social media is clearly not Dr. Klem’s forte), but not in the detail or with the delight that I would expect.

They nest in palms, and we found a small area where we observed several couples investigating and preparing nest holes. Our group travels into the wetlands of the San Tomás reserve by boat (small, wooden boats masterfully steered by local workers) to a small platform on the edge of the channel where we make a semicircle and wait.

The overwhelming passage in November of Proposition 2 in California, which banned tight confinement of many of the animals raised for food, is a fine example of the power of publicity to educate people about the atrocities we commit to those animals who have no voice of their own.
