Animals for research purposes are coming from municipal shelters, breeders and the greyhound trade. None of the animal shelters contacted by the Herald Sun have come across ex-research dogs in need of a home. Unwanted farm dogs are another source. From the Herald Sun. The fate of many others remains unclear.

Here's a great question I received via direct message on Twitter ( www.twitter.com/mary_martin ): "Do you think that even if Obama had adopted a shelter dog-it still may have caused a run on breeders? This is why I didn't campaign for a greyhound--it raises their profile. Would it matter?" That's what I'd like to think. Maybe both.

Brief commentary follows this e-mail I received regarding greyhounds, animal rights and Ireland. Dear ARAN Members, I remember as a young child throwing stones and sticks at a terrified greyhound that slept in a back shed a few blocks from where I live. He would not return for many hours.

Breeds with very short fur like Chihuahuas, boxers and greyhounds may have a hard time keeping warm, making even brief walks uncomfortable. If you find a lost or stray pet, please call your local animal control or nearest animal shelter. Not all dogs were born with lush fur coats that keep off the winter chill. Wipe Those Paws.
