And I received confirmation of something I've known since 2004, when we adopted retired racing greyhound, Violet Rays: That there's sort of a critical period for dog-behavior acquisition, and if it's missed, the dog isn't likely to mature into the type of loving being whose behavior we've come to associate with "pet" dogs.

Duffy really needs to be the only pet in the home or perhaps with a female dog (ask just in case--the implication was there). Duffy doesn't chase cats when on a leash, but in the home it's a different story.

The life expectancy of greyhounds is 12-15 years. So I went through bag by bag of everything at our small pet health food store until I found the perfect combination of dead animals and their parts. There she is. She has beaten the odds and made it another year. If they've raced, you subtract a year for each year of racing.

When I saw the Live Science article about dogs being as smart as 2-year-old kids I knew that if there were any talk of ranking, my beloved greyhounds would be at the less-desirable end of the list (not from personal experience, but from reputation), and I also knew that there would be a whiff of speciesism.
