Uganda is seeing a growth in tourism dollars from visits to see its mountain gorillas. The tourism revenue creates an incentive for Uganda to protect the endangered species at the same time that it contributes to human welfare. There are only about 700 mountain gorillas left in the world. This is very important.

Zoo patrons were shocked to see Barika, a western lowland gorilla, holding a knife and apparently pointing it at another primate in the enclosure. Tags: zoos welfare violations animal welfare. A zookeeper had left the knife behind in the exhibit.

Europe's environment chief plans to ban laboratory tests on mankind's closest relatives -- chimpanzees, gorillas, bonobos and orangutans -- in a clampdown on animal testing by the drugs industry and other laboratories. Is this a solution to a problem that doesn't exist?

If the directive is approved, the number of animals used for experiments will be limited, and the animals’ welfare will be improved in accordance with ethical principles of the EU concerning animals. I really hope this passes.

The European Community and the member states signatory to the treaty are required “to pay full regard to the welfare requirements of animals.” For example, the Treaty of Amsterdam that came into force on May 1, 1999, formally acknowledged that nonhuman animals are “sentient beings” and not merely goods or agricultural products.
