You can own a gorilla in Indiana, but not a bear in Michigan. In Oregon you can’t own any “dangerous” wild animals, but you can get a special permit for a service monkey and anyone can fill their backyard with giraffes. For instance, you can own a lion in Alabama, but not in California.

In other words, you can’t say something like, “humans, gorillas, chimps, and bonobos are all in the same family and equally related to each other.” For example, it would make a huge amount of sense for suspensory feeding monkeys to have six, not four, limbs. Monkey is a common, not scientific, term.

Chimpanzees and elephants grieve the loss of family and friends, and gorillas hold wakes for the dead. Donna Fernandes, president of the Buffalo Zoo, witnessed a wake for a female gorilla, Babs, who had died of cancer at Boston’s Franklin Park Zoo. After mating with a female, the male strutted away and accidentally fell into a ditch.

The trip was short on time, so no gorillas, chimps, or Albertine Rift endemics. Resident Red-tailed Monkeys, Vervet Monkeys, and Bushbabies are fun to watch but they do throw “stuff” at your cabin. This is my first post, so I won’t provide details on the stuff, but you know monkeys – they have a weird sense of humor.
