Nyala, Southern Africa’s Stunning Antelope

I’m a big fan of the antelopes, a group that is most commonly associated with Africa but which also occurs in Asia and, if you stretch the term to be cladistically meaningful, Europe and North America. By this I mean applying the term antelope to cover all of the family Bovidae, which would include the sheep, goats and ox.

It should surprise no one that someone brought horses, or goats, or chickens. Secondly, New Zealand had already experienced on wave of extinction due to the introduction or rats and human hunting. California Quail are familiar birds to West Coast birders of North America, and Kiwis too now. But hedgehogs? Greenfinches?

I very much enjoyed the first section, which relates the history of the bird and its relationship with us, humans, from its discovery in 1851 up to the fateful Lake Mack fire and its aftermath in the 1980’s. Most of the chapters are in the first two sections; the future is a brief, open question.
