Luckily for us, the gull featured on Rebuke, a Helles-style lager from Brown’s Brewing Company of Troy, New York, is depicted in silhouette, which gets us off the hook ID-wise, as far as I’m concerned. Well, good for them. We’ve got a beer to drink. They’re close, but not quite the same.

Black Woodpeckers are usually easy to find in Germany. At least one birder will now likely grab his war hammer and check flight availabilities from New York to Frankfurt as well as average prison sentences in Germany for first degree murder. Here in Germany, we have them. But this is really unnecessary. Any forest.

My ears perk up with every new song, my tail wags (ok, not literally, but darn close) every time I see or hear about a newly-returned migrant. So right now I’m feeling pretty good about Eurasian Collared-doves. Especially of all the species that had been introduced to the US. RECENT POSTS More Habitat for Snowy Plover?

We have avian beauty right in our European back yards as well, and need not seek cover when encountering birders from far-away shores. Redgannet, you’ll have to come visit New York City sometime soon. are up next, with a wonderful Australian species: It is very hard to choose a Best Bird of the Year any year. This weird little skulking waterfowl is a species I had hoped to chance upon in various places for quite some time. Clare (and Grant!)

Orlando is so rich in roadside and overhead birds that I kept a list of species seen from the car which ran to 30+ on the first morning and included a Bald Eagle nonchalantly sitting on a street lamp by a Target store. Wicked, right? This is not good habitat for a Redgannet ; I had to get out of line. Hat-tip to Stella.
