Luckily for us, the gull featured on Rebuke, a Helles-style lager from Brown’s Brewing Company of Troy, New York, is depicted in silhouette, which gets us off the hook ID-wise, as far as I’m concerned. We’ve got a beer to drink. The name is a reference to its color, coming from a German word for “bright” or “light”.

Black Woodpeckers are usually easy to find in Germany. At least one birder will now likely grab his war hammer and check flight availabilities from New York to Frankfurt as well as average prison sentences in Germany for first degree murder. Here in Germany, we have them. But this is really unnecessary. Any forest.

Redgannet, you’ll have to come visit New York City sometime soon. But in 2020, with all my travel plans cancelled and pretty much everything shut down, I wasn’t straying too far from Albany, New York for birding. I’m sure once we get a vaccine that I can show you something better than a Black Kite !

Lately, it’s been hot and mostly dry here in eastern New York lately, with long stretches of humid, summery days without wind or rain, when even the slightest breeze would have provided some relief. The winds have abated too, with the gentle breezes of spring giving way to the still, oppressive heat of summer. But none came.

Sure, occasionally a bird has given me problems, like Black-backed Woodpeckers back in 2007 when I was doing an alleged Big Year in New York State, but not seeing a bird for a single year does not make it a nemesis. It’s not that I wasn’t in the right spot. But Black Woodpecker ? What happened? Mwa-hahahahahahaha!

They are not so incredibly rare in Germany anymore but this was the first I’ve seen around Heidelberg and the first anywhere since 2009. If it doesn’t count: Crested Tits popping up all over my neighbourhood, south of Heidelberg, Germany. Wicked, right? Hat-tip to Stella.

My ears perk up with every new song, my tail wags (ok, not literally, but darn close) every time I see or hear about a newly-returned migrant. So right now I’m feeling pretty good about Eurasian Collared-doves. In Germany, they occur throughout but are considerably rarer e.g. around the Baltic or Berlin than they are in the SW.
