It provides shelter for many songbirds and water-associated animals, including the river otter, turtles, beaver, American pelicans, ospreys, and migratory songbirds.

My second favorite rescue story is that of Hunter, a beagle-ish dog that my daughter and son-in-law adopted from a shelter in Massachusetts. Hunters kill members of endangered species. Would intelligent beings riot over the out come of a soccer game? And perhaps my favorite: "[I]f healthy, homeless humans were rounded up and killed, no one would call the killing facilities 'shelters'" (55). Any animal threatened with a gun or arrow is endangered.
