Week four: We wrap up our stay in the US.

This cold weather and snow does not seem to have much effect on the huge number of ducks and geese, but the smaller song birds, all seem to wake up much later in the days, and only after it has warmed up a bit. These were my first Fox Sparrows of the year. I got to see several Brown Creepers in the area.

What human can point out a fox hidden nearby and how to avoid it? The first few years for female ducks and geese are kind of practice rounds. Experienced Canada geese will corral young from less experienced females and you’ll find rafts of 20 goslings tended by a four adults–safety in large numbers.

Birding after the rains

Plumed Whistling Ducks and Wandering Whistling Ducks have been nesting in these wet areas and our first pair of Green Pygmy-geese for 2017 were floating around on the track! Native flying fox. The birds gathered along the main highway during the worst of the floods and Magpie Geese arrived and bred in large numbers.

Aleutian Cackling Geese on Buldir Island, Alaska, where they made their final stand. Aleutian Cackling Geese are another bird very familiar with the Pacific; they are the only species of goose that nest on Alaska’s remote Aleutian Islands. is on a boat in the Aleutian chain.

The author, conservation biologist Caroline Fox, is observing the albatross’s shadow to the side of the boat. Fox notes the albatross in her “soaking-wet notebook” and watches it circle and fly back into the masking glare. Fox does an excellent job balancing these three elements, keeping the emphasis on the birds.

Butte Valley Wildlife Area and Meiss Lake

As we entered the wildlife area we saw hundreds of shorebirds, W hite-faced Ibis , American White Pelican , several species of duck and hundreds of G reater White-fronted Geese. We scoped many birds because the road traversing the wildlife area is elevated above the impoundments allowing the birds to see your vehicle coming from afar.
