According to some sources, when the so-called Pilgrims settled in for the First Thanksgiving Dinner with the local Native Americans, in 1620, they dined on Turkey, and this Turkey came from the Old World, from stock that was originally brought to Spain by Columbus. They may have also had hunting dogs with them as well.

A foraging Northern Bald Ibis near Tamri, Morocco by Adam Riley Extinction, driven by loss of feeding habitat, nest disturbance, hunting and poisoning, seemed inevitable. Small semi-captive populations also exist in Spain and Austria and a reintroduction program from the Birecik population has been started in Syria.

Chamois is an agile goat-antelope with short hooked horns, found in mountainous areas of Europe from Spain to the Caucasus. In a second, it disappeared into trees, down towards a rocky gorge, but not before I spotted it. Yes, yes, I know, not countable – it’s not a bird. A non-bird Best Bird of the Year? Preposterous!
