Yes, cute little Skylarks were all well and good, but what Kiwis really wanted were birds they could shoot and fish they could, uh, fish. New Zealand had, once upon a time, some fairly spectacular game birds, including massive flightless geese, massive flightles rails, and really enormous moa.

Among the gentry there seems not to have been much of a line between being a bird watcher and a bird hunter, and the home naturalist could certainly develop a nice private collection. Frogs and fish and insects and rodents yes, but not birds. Which keep eating rat poison. Or get your own. Not birds, though. But I digress.

The South Georgia Pipit is near threatened, its nests predated by rats, and is one of the main reasons that the South Georgia Heritage Trust aims to eradicate rats from the whole area. Over 3 million pairs of Antarctic Fur Seals breed on South Georgia, saved from near extinction by fur hunters.

We actually spent considerable time searching unsuccessfully for this highly sought-after bird; however I did suspect they were not gone, as several hunters I interviewed knew the bird and claimed it still existed. The rare Rufous Fishing Owl was one of the many species seen by the group here. million hectares in 2007.
