Next came a stop in Russia. Here’s his third stop: In June of 2013, we arrived in Helsinki, the capital and largest city in Finland, and our third destination on our European getaway. And, as appears to be the case in most cities in Finland, wildlife and nature is only steps away! Of course, birding was on the itinerary!

Where it had spent the summer is anyone’s guess, but the majority of the Pochard that winter in the UK come from Eastern Europe and Russia, with birds ringed in Latvia being particularly numerous. Was it the same individual? My guess is that it probably was. These two Racklehahns were quite different.

The Ural Owl inhabits old and undisturbed boreal forests, in an unbroken belt from Sweden and Finland across Russia to Japan, and is rarely seen to the south, only here and there, in the Carpathians (Slovakia/Ukraine/Romania/eastern Serbia) and Dinaric Alps (Croatia/Bosnia/western Serbia).

The Willow Ptarmigan, which is the most numerous, can also be found in Russia, Finland, Scandinavia, and Canada. The Willow Ptarmigan was officially designated in 1960, when Alaska entered the union. There are three species of ptarmigan, all found in Alaska.
