The mascot for this year’s National Justice for Animals Week is Adam, a spunky black cat who was set on fire by two teenage girls in a vicious attack in Santa Rosa, California, as an eight-week-old feral kitten. ALDF is honoring Adam and all those who came to his rescue with a special video profile that will be available on www.aldf.org.

Half a decade ago, in a little mountain town about 60 miles northeast of San Diego, a feral kitten dragged his front left leg uselessly. Henry’s sister, Dolly, a poodle living the perfect dog life, was minding her business as the sole pet of the family in Cathy and Donna’s house when the pair decided to rescue the cat.

The causes were the usual reasons for island extinction—deforestation by both humans and invasive plants that crowded out native plants, hunting, and invasive rats, mongoose, monkeys, and, of course, feral cats. Because, it has been much more valuable as a cultural icon, a symbol of whimsey and extinction.
