Pied Oystercatcher nesting

There are sixteen pairs of Pied Oystercatchers and they have varying success at raising young birds. The main problem appears to be feral cats, but there is also predation from birds of prey and the parent Pied Oystercatchers do their utmost to protect their young. The point is, Wildcat, the very close cousin to, physically identical to a domestic kitty cat but with a kick-ass attitude, is these days as African a beast as is the Lion (which once also lived across Europe and Africa) or the Okapi (which did not). I once knew a guy who kept and raised cats. That was one of his cats.

The Wildlife Rehabilitator’s Wish List

The general public is out and about, birds and animals are raising their young, and human/wildlife interaction is at its peak. I wish for a federal law prohibiting domestic and feral cats from roaming free outdoors. Why is there no state or federal money available to care for federally protected species? Change in Law.

We can only hope that by laying only one egg and having only one chick to raise that they may have more luck second time round. We do not add debris to protect the nests and the main threat to the nests still appears to be feral cats. Pied Oystercatcher nest site.
