Redgannet was in town and had all day to get out looking for birds so I had booked us for the pelagic trip out of Freeport and our plan was to find his life Snowy Owl and then get on the boat and enjoy a host of alcids, gulls, and gannets. The owl, much to Redgannet’s dismay, was a no-show. Saturday was set aside for birding.

I was high and happy, not from “420” drugs but from the altitude and the anticipation of seeing woodpeckers and owls I had never seen before. Late summer 2023 the lakes and ponds had been empty, presumably because the ducks and geese were moulting. What is 100% true is the flight number I took into Denver: 420.

Anyway, we arrived, spotted a Great Horned Owl in flight and waited and waited and waited. En route to our next stop we slowed down next to a park and spotted the now countable Egyptian Geese. And could we just do a quick drive through at a fast food joint? Only one cuckoo? Of course not! We never even got out of the car!
