Listed as Near Threatened, this charismatic species has a tiny distribution restricted to central Costa Rica, especially in the Central Valley. It doesn’t require forest but the coffee farms and scrubby green space it does need are under constant pressure of being destroyed and replaced with urban housing. Check out the video!

Definitively the Egyptians!

In short, the accepted view used to be that a small breeding population of Egyptian Vultures inhabited Southern Africa, but has vanished facing the spread of towns, roads and farms. During my lifetime, this species was rare in my native Serbia, too.

Lake Apopka – Florida’s Inland Rarity Hotspot

But all this changed in the early 1940s with the establishment of vegetable muck farms on the lake’s north shore. The healthy marshes that filtered the lake’s incoming water were drained to make room for the muck farms. Additionally, 367 bird species have been recorded. Lake Apopka at sunset.

Birding Deliblato Sands: What I have seen and what I haven’t

They are quite a rare breeding species in Serbia, declining as we speak, but one pair breeds nearby. They are rare breeders here, but at least, this species’ numbers are on the increase. A pair of European Turtle Doves on a wire, followed by two soaring Common Buzzards …. I must digress further.

But, as with so many other species, these birds have been left to do their own whistle blowing. West Indian Whistling Ducks are the largest of the eight different whistling duck species. In December, 1990, a single pair of ducks and some young birds began to feed at the farm of Mr. Willie Ebanks, at Hutland, Northside, in Grand Cayman.

Call B for Birder or Waterfowling East Anglia

In my native Serbia, I’ve observed this species in winter only once, while here in East Anglia every site held one. First site of the day was Breydon Water, the large estuary at the mouths of the Yare and the Waveney. The biggest surprise among the Breydon birds was one Little Egret , only the first of several I was going to see that day.
