The dog breeding legislation, intended to outlaw “puppy-farming”, was prepared by Green Party leader and Minister for the Environment John Gormley. Fine Gael and rural Fianna Fáil backbenchers have called for greyhound breeders to be exempt because the industry is already regulated by existing legislation.

Animals for research purposes are coming from municipal shelters, breeders and the greyhound trade. Unwanted farm dogs are another source. From the Herald Sun. In 2007, 394 dogs died during procedures for canine and human research. The fate of many others remains unclear.

In " Food for the Soul ," Kristof once again yearns for the farm of his childhood which, for him, had "soul." What that means is that it wasn't a factory-farm operation. Essentially, industrialized farming=soulless, small family farm=soulful. I'm not sure how that equals soul. on my schedule and for my palate.

As long as the animals aren't on a farm or otherwise being used by humans, I love the idea of animals in the lives of babies. I chose a cow for Sky's first stuffed animal, and I hope that she will grow up to honor and respect the lives of cows the same way she will honor and respect the lives of greyhounds.
