Animals for research purposes are coming from municipal shelters, breeders and the greyhound trade. Unwanted farm dogs are another source. In 2007, 394 dogs died during procedures for canine and human research. None of the animal shelters contacted by the Herald Sun have come across ex-research dogs in need of a home.

Because we planned to adopt I had been researching eco-friendly, vegan nursery items but had yet to purchase a thing. As long as the animals aren't on a farm or otherwise being used by humans, I love the idea of animals in the lives of babies. We named her Skylar and she's adorable and sweet and has a very punk hairdo.

On a very quiet night during a lull in the drama of the ducks, I was researching the Greyhound racing industry, and seething over its treatment of dogs as well as the support it often gets, through subsidies, to help it survive.
