But even birders might be surprised to learn that eight species of woodpecker have graced New York City’s five boroughs with their presence!

The dirt road winds in between rocky outcrops – kopjes, by Burchell’s Zebras and Greater Kudus. A little further, there’s a family group of Savannah Elephants with two two-year olds. Related to starlings, like woodpeckers they move over large mammals feeding on ticks, but also on their hosts’ blood. Sniffing us.

We had not been expecting to see a Banded Woodpecker and there we had one right in front of us. It was clear from the tree trunk that the Banded Woodpecker most likely stopped by this tree on a regular basis to look for food. However, I do have some photographs of the Banded Woodpecker ! Zebra Doves , Tree Sparrows , Pacific Swallows , Pink-necked Pigeons , Yellow-vented Bulbuls , Asian Koel , Spotted Dove , Rock Dove , Red Junglefowl , Oriental White Eyes and Black-naped Orioles were soon on our list. This area was good during our visits over the three weeks for Laced Woodpeckers and Common Flamebacks. Monk Parakeet.
