Preparing for the Onslaught

Animal Person

My husband has two friends (a male/female couple) who are transitioning from vegetarian to vegan and I also have two friends (both women) who are transitioning from omnivore and all are dreading Thanksgiving. The conversations with family and friends have already begun about "Turkey Day." Not humans, not animals."

To My Friends at Thanksgiving

Animal Person

Thanksgiving 2010 will be Baby Sky's first, and our opportunity to introduce her to the notion that our family doesn't eat animals (not to mention that other historical story we'll be correcting). The two objections to a vegan Thanksgiving that I hear most often are: It's our tradition and Because it tastes good. It's our tradition.

On The Respectful Emperor

Farmers were bragging about how much they "loved" the animals they would soon betray and slaughter, and many omnivores who had discovered how animals are treated wanted to assuage their consciences a bit by "at least" giving the animals a better life prior to their untimely slaughter. Like when they're about to be, say, slaughtered? What about being torn from your family? Not to mention the reality that there is so much more involved in being bred for slaughter than pain, and none of that is addressed. That action is to opt out and go vegan. This is where I'm confused. What about being raped?

An Affront to the Idea of Family

Animal Person

I'm not one of those people who thinks family is composed of only humans or humans who are biologically related. The idea of family is currently being used by the dairy industry in a series of commercials with the tag line: "99% of dairy farms are family owned." Ninety-nine percent of dairy farms are family owned.

On "EATING ANIMALS" by Jonathan Safran Foer

Animal Person

I say "if you know someone" because this isn't a book I'd recommend to vegans for their vegan education efforts. The vegans I know would probably find it a bit maddening, and here's why: We aren't sure whether Foer is a vegan. He is against it for himself and his family. Not great, but good. He never says he is.

On Letting Your Emotions Rule the Day

Lack of knowledge about agriculture" might be irrelevant, but it's also untrue, as most vegans I know know far more than non-vegans about animal agriculture, and it's that knowledge that makes them want to be vegans. The problem, then, is the question Scott is asking and the assumptions he is making.
