Back from Seattle

We had a blast, the family and I, and experienced some amazing natural places, to say nothing of the fine city of Seattle. To go by the numbers, I saw 79 species of bird while in Washington (150 county ticks), 21 of which were year birds and 8 of which were lifers. The Lucky Diner on First Avenue in Seattle has delicious food.

And where will I be going that will have the birds I want to see and be acceptable destinations for a non-birding family? Seattle’s Discovery Park, a 534-acre jewel on Puget Sound, is described in A Birder’s Guide to Washington as “Seattle’s best one-stop birding venue&# so, clearly, a visit there is in order.

We live in Seattle, which is part of King County. Keeping abuse in the family! She says that northwest Washington is a refuge for puppy mills because regulation up there is particularly lax. What a mess. We blogged about the Gold Bar, Snohomish County, raid last week). And, of course, they are all "designer dogs."

The end of this rather long road trip finds us here in Puyallup, Washington which is just south of Seattle. We pulled into the RV park next to the Washington State Fairgrounds on Saturday afternoon, and it promptly started snowing! Nisqually NWR.

Nisqually Delta Wildlife Refuge

The last weekend of January found me in the frosty Pacific Northwest, meeting some long over due work and family obligations. This wonderful piece of birding real estate can be found 8 miles east of Olympia, and an hour’s drive south of Seattle Washington, right along the I-5 corridor. Nisqually Wildlife Refuge.

We arrived in Seattle 6 days ago, at 12:30 in the morning, after being on the road, in one form or another since February 1st. Circumstances have been such, that the bulk of my visits to Nisqually, have been in the winter, so the refuge, in the peak of a Seattle Summer, is a much different place. Back in the US of A!
