Here are the sentences that I want to bring attention to: The family of Irv Bell, 64, has been growing hogs in Zanesville, Ohio, since the 19th century. This adds another layer to yesterday's discussion about family. Irv Bell's farm is a family farm. After all, he's part of a family business. It's also a factory farm.

The three young men returned to their friends, bragged about their exploits, and showed them trophies: metal banding tags, which members of the Pacific Rim Conservation had carefully placed on the albatrosses’ legs in order to keep track of individual birds. The young men had severed the birds’ legs in order to remove the tags.

We are not people who are interested in discussing animal rights, as in, the right of sentient nonhumans to not be used by humans for potential profit, for sport or for lunch. Maybe "humane" is already on its way out for the folks trying to convince themselves and others that humane killing isn't an oxymoron. That's respect.

But the message remains the same, and it's the only such message available in film to my knowledge (and please let me know of any others): there's simply no way to kindly, politely, "humanely" take someone's life when you don't need to. Tags: Activism Ethics Film. But that doesn't matter because it's the betrayal that I identify with.

The conversations with family and friends have already begun about "Turkey Day." I've had family members ask me to refrain from "proselytizing" to not "spoil the day" for everyone and to "give it a rest" and let everyone eat in peace. I haven't had a Thanksgiving with family members in years. Not humans, not animals."

His passion and compassion for humans is immense, but he appears to have some kind of mental block with nonhuman animals. I suppose speciesism/human exceptionalism is at the heart of the matter. He just doesn't believe that other beings lives might have a purpose all their own that is entirely unrelated to humans. I'm on my way.

Here is the letter: I’ve just received an urgent report that another city in China is planning a mass cull to slaughter any unregistered dogs, strays, and even registered family dogs that are over 14 inches (35cm) tall. Can you imagine being forced to kill your own dog to save it from a more brutal slaughter?
