On large islands shaded with multiple trees, a family of orangutans and another of gorillas lounged in the green grass. Multiple varieties of ungulates jogged from place to place, while giant rhea birds stalked around looking for food. Just beyond a fence, a pair of rhino adults and one baby munched contentedly on hay.

The wonderful family Meropidae contains 27 dazzling species, of which Africa is endowed with no less than 20 species, the balance occurring across Asia and with one as far afield as Australia. Excellent sites for seeing this beauty include Bwindi Impenetrable Gorilla National Park in Uganda and Ghana’s Kakum National Park.

In other words, you can’t say something like, “humans, gorillas, chimps, and bonobos are all in the same family and equally related to each other.” Therefore, humans are fish with feet, right? According to cladists, every organism is a member of any group of organisms that includes it.

Here are some observations: When reading a book about gorillas to/with a seven-year old, I was struck by the mixed messages the book sent. Here 's the book, and in the preview you can see that in the beginning when the gorilla being described is male he is referred to as "he." Also, the have families (as if other animals don't).

This has happened before, Archaeopteryx and the bird family tree have had an often tenuous relationship. If you lay out all the mandibles and maxilla of all the mammals, you could construct a phylogeny that would be a pretty good first stab at a reasonable mammal family tree.
