I always approach the bridge slowly to see what bird species are below and around the area. There is a family of feral foxes that I often encounter near Bennison Creek. Once I find a few active species I watch and wait. This particular tree has been excellent for a variety of bird species including Eastern Spinebills.

Getting the Year List Started in Queens

Every single species, even the European Starlings above, count as one bird on the year’s checklist. Sadly, though I managed to sneak out of the house while friends and family entertained each other, the goose had flown the coop. On January first my year list, just like every other birder’s year list, reverted to zero.

As we wandered along the trail we soon encountered family groups of both White-winged Fairywrens and Variegated Fairywrens. Feral pigs. Orange Chat. Australian Pelicans soaring in the thermals.

Clearly this is not a particularly good idea, but there are also situations where a birder may be a passenger, and this presents opportunities for a kind of speed-birding, where a trip of a few hours can give you a hasty introduction to an area’s birds. Feral Turkey are also quite common.
