On the way, we saw a Peregrine Falcon , Common Buzzard , Eurasian Nuthatch , and the other typical birds of the region. On the reptile front however, we were rewarded with with a large number of common wall lizards that saw the warm sun as a rare opportunity to sunbathe on the stone walls along the paths through the vineyard.

Last year, 4,000 young Peregrine Falcons swept through the Keys on their way north. They see a lot of young Brown Pelicans ; they see a lot of juvenile birds in general, all of whom tend to hug the coast on their first migration. KWWC also has a thriving feral chicken sideline.

The mongabay.com portal has compared data on a unit of area basis of the percentage of the total global number of species of birds, amphibians, mammals, reptiles, fish and vascular plants. And small country often equals short distances and easy traveling. The best season is December, followed by June-July.

From Canada, this migration is more than 10,000 km each way, a distance second among raptors only to that of the Arctic Peregrine Falcon 1. I’ve noted at least nine species of reptiles and amphibians, even our native opossum and squirrel. In a couple weeks I’ll be keeping my ears alert for the flight calls of incoming shorebirds, they shall definitely be followed by a Peregrine Falcon. Of course, various species of bats as well.

One of those pooie reptiles: Green Iguana by Niklas Aronsson. This morning, they have seen some 10,000 Broad-winged Hawks , mixed up with two dozen Swainson’s Hawks , several Mississippi Kites and one or two King Vultures , Swallow-tailed and Double-toothed Kites , Merlins and Peregrine Falcons. Or even those pooie reptiles.

Not only do we take care of zillions of injured and orphaned birds/mammals/reptiles/whatever, we also have to deal with and educate the public. I had a finder bring me a bird he’d correctly ID’d as a merlin – a not-too-common falcon – but when he brought him in, I could see he’d been trying to feed it BIRD SEED!”
