I have never been one to advocate the needless killing of animals for whatever purpose. But after spending time with experienced falconers in the field I have come to respect and admire the responsible practitioners of this, the sport of kings. Many falconers use their birds to educate children as to the importance of raptors.

In fact, by all accounts, Mary adored sport and was an avid equestrienne, hunter, and falconer. The falcon hunt took place in the quiet, picturesque Flemish countryside south of Bruges, on the property of Adolph of Cleves, Lord of Ravenstein. The horse landed on the young duchess, breaking her back but not killing her outright.

The three huge eagles are lottery winner rare and the Orange-breasted Falcon has never been documented for the country but the rest are seen here and there on an annual basis. Secretarybirds counter this by being very careful when killing snakes and ensuring that the prey is dead before eating it. Sometimes they will pick up other prey and, aided by their incredible height, they will kill the prey by repeatedly dropping it on hard ground. Watching them hunt is fascinating.
