Interestingly, a bird of prey set off a psychological experiment. I also realise I may be insisting on a psychological reason while I just might be an incompetent birder. The ponds were full of birds as usual with abundant Common Snipe as well as Ruff , some Dunlin , Stilts and a few ducks, including Red-crested Pochards.

This leaves Shanghai in June with basically just the year-round species and the summer breeders, maybe with a few added ultra-lazy individuals of migratory species. Fortunately, there are a few more such breeding species than most Shanghainese are aware of. Such as the Black-winged Cuckooshrike.

This is something not seen in very young children but then typically develops and becomes observable and testable by psychology graduate students who have done innumerable studies on it. Even among our primate relatives, whoa are generally very smart, “Theory of Mind” is found in only a few species.

I’m not going to try to explain why people are fascinated by hawks; human-to-avian psychology is not my specialty. A quick comparison of how raptor species are depicted in Eastern Birds as compared to the photographic images in Raptors shows that each title has unique images. Thirty-four species of hawks are covered in the book.

One might first ask, “Why does higher intelligence mean that one species is more valuable than other species?” Second, there are other species besides human beings that have high intelligence, e.g., chimpanzees and dolphins. What should our moral attitude be toward eating members of these species? If not, why not?
