Only three accredited medical schools in the whole country use animals to teach surgery. Pippin told me there's a good reason all the other 150-plus medical schools in the country don't use animals in surgical education: There are better ways to teach surgery. Surgical simulators and supervised operating room experience work just fine.

Experience shows that bird parents do feed babies in makeshift nests reattached to tree branches, bushes, gutters, and even tree cavity sections duct taped to another tree. Mites will eventually kill the bird. It needs to be properly medicated and triaged. Wild bird rehabilitators want bird parents to feed their own babies.

Is it true that the least I can do is support the engineering of animals who experience less unpleasantness than they would have had they not been engineered that way? Why kill and maim and waste taxpayer dollars--or any dollars--on such things? In other words, the perception of pain is affected. This is where I'm confused.

Beloved family pet Dalmatian, Pepper, is stolen, and after several weeks of searching is discovered to have been experimented on at a hospital and died on the table when researchers tried to implant her with an experimental cardiac pacemaker. By the end of my time as researcher, I was performing behavioral experiments on humans.

The book, which I have not read, that saved Derrick Jensen 's life is called The Vegetarian Myth: Food, Justice, and Sustainability by Lierre Keith, who was a vegan for 20 years, suffered serious medical problems, and started feeling better when she recommenced eating animals. Throughout the book, Keith mocks vegetarians and vegans.

I particularly question the use of chimpanzees in medical research. How smart does a chimpanzee have to be before killing him constitutes murder? The natural experiment must have been tried very infrequently, at least recently. The following is from The Dragons of Eden by Carl Sagan.
