I was high and happy, not from “420” drugs but from the altitude and the anticipation of seeing woodpeckers and owls I had never seen before. Late summer 2023 the lakes and ponds had been empty, presumably because the ducks and geese were moulting. What is 100% true is the flight number I took into Denver: 420.

I haven’t even been to all of the best national wildlife refuges for birding. According to eBird, the chronology of my life list includes White-Headed Woodpecker at No. Given my west coast experience, I have made dedicated birding trips to several of the more predictable birding hotspots. 10, Mountain Quail at No.

Among birders, wildlife photographers, and nature enthusiasts, it is renowned for its incredible concentrations of birds at the end of the dry season. The incredible lighting at dawn in the Pantanal is an experience in of itself. Screamers are most closely related to waterfowl such as ducks and geese. I must mention one thing.

Corey encountered a bunch of winners, but 24 Common Redpolls at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, in almost the exact same spot he saw them a couple of years ago, feeding on birch inflorescence by the East Pond, were easily his best birds of the weekend.
