Fur and Fangs rather than Feathers and Beaks

10,000 Birds

One of my most memorable outings was a night-time game drive in Kenya when we saw an aardvark and a zorilla, so we ticked off both the first mammal in the field guide’s index, and the last. We also saw a leopard, but it was the A to Z that sticks in the mind. My only wolf sightings have been in Spain, in December, and at great range.

How to Bird Murchison Falls

10,000 Birds

An expanse of habitat as vast as Murchison Falls NP in Uganda, as excessively generous in beauty and biodiversity, permits endless ways to experience both its birds and animals. After weeks exploring the Pearl of Africa and visiting multiple game parks, I can look back and declare Murchison Falls NP my absolute favorite game park.

Africa’s Big Five and Little Five

10,000 Birds

What makes a good bird guide?

10,000 Birds

In my eyes, what counts is how someone plays the game. If you cannot share the bird with your guest, try not to share the experience because it makes everything they have seen a little league birding, compared to your mega tick. He suffered from the lack of experience as a traveler and someone who has hired guides himself.

10,000 Birds

Recent publicity about these remarkable tribes has resulted in tourists wanting to experience this wild land and its attractions for themselves. Game was not plentiful but the highlight was finding a beautiful female Leopard with her cub next to the road, and along the Mago River, a Da Brazza’s Monkey gorging himself on figs.

Tanzania – Africa at its best

10,000 Birds

Nowhere else in Africa do the preconceived ideas of the continent really exist in such living detail; tall, red-robed Maasai herding their skinny cattle, endless grasslands studded with flat-topped Acacia trees and grazed by herds of zebras and wildebeest, and dramatic volcanic calderas brimming with big game and fierce predators!

Madikwe; Paradise Restored

10,000 Birds

Madikwe may have been farmland once upon a time but these days it has been fully restored as an astonishing game reserve. It’s the only park I have ever been to that not only have I seen all five of the Big Five (Lion, Leopard, African Buffalo, White Rhino and African Elephant) in, but seen them all on the same day.
