Bradt travel guide to Sri Lanka by Philip Briggs – review

10,000 Birds

Sri Lanka is a ‘must visit country’ for any keen birder. Still, I was thinking and re-thinking: should I write about the Sri Lanka travel guide now, when that country is in an economic tailspin and even its Prime Minister says the economy has “completely collapsed”?

Where America dreams of/goes birding?

Some of those “statistical errors” came as surprises to me, e.g. Cuba, Bolivia, Uganda, Sri Lanka, Thailand (this is also a clear message to their tourism boards to invest more into promoting avitourism). They would like to experience it, but have no sufficient knowledge of its birding possibilities to choose one, or a few, instead of a continent as a whole. I had no intention of making a questionnaire or analysing the results.

Birding Without Borders: A Review

10,000 Birds

Often they had no guiding experience and no English, sometimes they seemed eccentric to the point of imbalance (or genius), such as Gunnar Engblom, the “bird-crazy Swede of Peru,” who showed Strycker the Black-Spectacled Brushfinch (#1027), an endangered bird with a tiny range; and the gorgeous Golden-backed Mountain-Tanager (#1112), a “real stunner” that Strycker considered one of the best sightings of his year.

And why? I discovered this map a while ago, hidden somewhere at the not so easy to navigate BirdLife International’s website, and I have used it as my computer wallpaper ever since.

The Jewel Hunter: A Book Review About One Birder’s Quest for Pittas and Beer

10,000 Birds

The chapter on Sri Lanka, where Gooddie combines a vacation with his girlfriend, largely invisible elsewhere in the book, with his search for Indian Pitta, is to my taste one of the best parts of the book. The Jewel Hunter is heavily laced with Gooddie’s particular brand of broad ironic humor, and I did enjoy that, but I would have traded about 10 percent for a little more insight into the unexpected outcomes of his experience.
