So, beside a lot of birds and the sunny sky, I want the coldest thing to experience year-round to be my beer. While there is a lot left to be done when it comes to research and nature protection in many tropical countries, there are not that many jobs in that line of work, and ecotourism seem to be the industry of choice.

Birding Sepilok, Borneo (Part 2)

The associated bird species seek out drongos, apparently relying upon them heavily for protection. My cats refuse to even try Fiery Minivets. The drongo perches above the flock, snatching insects that they disturb, and keeping an eye out for predators that might go unnoticed by its hunting flock-mates.

Where America dreams of/goes birding?

Some of those “statistical errors” came as surprises to me, e.g. Cuba, Bolivia, Uganda, Sri Lanka, Thailand (this is also a clear message to their tourism boards to invest more into promoting avitourism). Africa is a huge continent with varied landscapes and rich biodiversity. In general, birders do not know what Africa offers.

The Jewel Hunter: A Book Review About One Birder’s Quest for Pittas and Beer

The chapter on Sri Lanka, where Gooddie combines a vacation with his girlfriend, largely invisible elsewhere in the book, with his search for Indian Pitta, is to my taste one of the best parts of the book. There is little factual material here about global conservation and protection, but that is not the book’s purpose.
