Its amazing to me that there are still places on earth where wildlife is blissfully unafraid of humans. It comes as no surprise that this was one of Jacques Cousteau’s favorite places and he filmed the area and its wildlife extensively for his tv series. Swimming with a whale shark on the boat-trip to Isla Isabel.

The Ross Sea is the most productive stretch of water in the Southern Ocean, teeming with large predatory fish, whales, seals, penguins and other animals that form the last intact marine ecosystem on Earth. It took me awhile, but I managed to get on quite a few, especially when the boat slowed down to go check out some Humpback Whales and a huge number of Common Dolphins. Sooty Shearwaters and a Western Gull fly back the aftermath of a Humpback Whale breaching. Humpback Whale Megaptera novaeangliae. It was amazing.

This time I’ll be working with Wildlife ACT in Zululand, helping that NGO monitor wildlife in a range of reserves and parks in the east of South Africa. I bring this up not to boast (well, not much) but because I think that this approach to wildlife travel is somewhat neglected in birding circles.

Even people with no other interest in wildlife, who couldn’t tell a sparrow from an ostrich (or even a dolphin from a fish) love dolphins. I had my first swim with Inshore Bottlenose Dolphins in Northland’s Bay of Islands back in 2000, and it was a tripy experience. Which has always mystified me slightly.

Birding has been an all-consuming interest for Patrick Cardwell since boyhood days spent in a wildlife-rich environment. Generally, it is the Antarctic Prion ( desolata ) that occurs sporadically off Cape Point in the winter months, although other species of Prion have also been reported from time to time.

Life Along the Delaware Bay starts with a brief cultural history of the Bay, showing the sod dikes farmers built to drain the marshes, and how Cape May went from being a whaling town to a Victorian beach resort to the home of the Cape May Hawk Watch. They use the photographs as part of the textual flow. Ah, the photographs!
