We have several quail-dove species in Costa Rica, this one is only found in cloud forest here and in western Panama. This sprite made it onto the list because its the smallest bird in Costa Rica and is maybe easier here than in western Panama. Rufous-winged Woodpecker. In some spots, this amazing bird even visits feeders.

Some names are clearly descriptive and thus make one feel good about saying them; woodpecker and grosbeak come to mind. This high elevation pewee only occurs in the mountains of Costa Rica and a smidgeon of western Panama. Sunbittern also works because what else could that bizarre and ancient bird be called? Rail-Heron? Heron-Rail?

I savor the timeless experience of scanning these tropical waves for storm-petrels and lost jaegers. Thanks to that bird’s choice of hunting grounds and David having plenty of time to watch it, he has documented the bird chasing everything from motmots to large woodpeckers as well as occasional visits from the parents.
