I’ve taken tours out of Monterey Bay (with pelagic legend Debi Shearwater , now retired) and Half Moon Bay, California ; Newport, Oregon ; and Hatteras, North Carolina. Additionally, there are still a few regularly-occurring Pacific pelagic species that I have never seen. This was much larger.

Perhaps the best experience of the two days I spend offshore was not a bird, but a mammal. The depths of the North Atlantic are unknown and, in many ways, unknowable. Up until the middle of last century, this species of whale was only known from the remains of beached individuals.
